About the songs, what they are about...
These things that we give you come from under our skin.
I hope they hold you the same why they have held us.
Thank you- BD Winfield

1. Four Horsemen - Winfield
Good Evening one and all.
I am here to tell you,
We have come from the Mythical Land Between the Lakes
with dirt on our hands, fire in our belly, and ghost in our hearts,
For we are Cicada Omega.

Here we are, and hear us now.
We bring, new age, old age, space age, transcendental, junkyard blues
from the dark and bloody ground of Kentucky,
We are Cicada Omega, The Four horsemen from the New Blue moon.
Cicada Omega, A plague of locust upon you.

2. Last Night - Traditional
"The apocalypse has kept its hold on the cultural psyches of civilizations around the world for thousands of years. Fear of a cataclysmic end is the basis for countless stories and nightmares for every generation". This is a traditional gospel song I first heard done by the Staple Singers on the subject. A dream of the end.

3. The Boogie - Winfield / Hooker
This is a tribute to the Late Great John Lee Hooker. Some people forget too easy what those who came before us have done, But we will not let that happen to John Lee. This song is not a cover because you could never cover him. It is just our way to let people know the magic that is the Heeler, Mr. Lucky, the Booker, the Cooker, and Mr. John Lee Hooker. "I don't play a lot of fancy guitar. I don't want to play it. The kind of guitar I want to play is mean, mean licks."

4. Ring Like Gold - Traditional
A traditional work song from those who were chained to the work they do.
We have taken those chains and used them to try to beat the Hell right out of it.

5. Flatline and the Never Ending Story of Chief Paduke - Winfield
According to legend, Chief Paduke, a Chickasaw, welcomed the settlers traveling down the Ohio to settle across the river in Kentucky. The settlers were appreciative of his hospitality, and respectful of his ways. The two communities lived in harmony until William Clark asked the Chief and the settlers to move along, which they did....
Paducah is still there.

Do you remember the Cave? And the story of how we came to be?
Of Big Chief Paduke, and how he made it rain?
We liked it. We lloved it. We kissed the dawn.
Then Chief Paduke got home sick. And he cried a river of blood.

Chief Paduke, grew up, down in the south land.
A tomahawk, Chickasaw, mountain man.
Had it all going on, till he had to get up and get real gone.
Lived his days on the run dancing, singing and laughing.

Where it go? Where it go? Sweet thing's gone away now.
Chief Paduke traded it all for a bug zapper totem smile.
So he climbed up in the clouds, turned around and came back down,
riding on the lightning

All with a shake of a hand ... He traded a nation like casteration.
No reach around for a dollar date. Give me hot rod wheel chairs and neon cowboys.
This good trade, I can't wait... I'm yodeling like a hustler. Given gain green up in the hills.
Cooloo Zulu, Chief Paduke said rocks are good, but soon we be gone.
We are all going down to a flatline

6. I Smell Smoke - Winfield
Fireman bring me some water. I smell smoke.
Farm animals waiting for the slaughter. Hangman dancing with the rope.
Fireman bring me some water. I smell smoke.
Been making love to the Devils daughter. And she's been raped by the Pope

She said that all the answers are here. She said it like I would care.
She said that we all disapear. She said it like I would care.

Fireman bring me some water. I smell smoke.
I've been hang'n with blind men. They’ve been tell'n deaf jokes.
Fireman bring me some water. I Smell Smoke.
Bought me a ticket on a boat ride. I know it will never float.
Fireman bring me some water. I smell smoke.

7. Believe - Live improvisation
"And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Mark 16:17-18

8. Big Black Chain - Winfield
Woke up this morning wanting to lay back down.
You see all them good things have turned around.
It's love you and leave you saying, "What?" Like a skeleton dance, rattle, "What?"
I see your fighting a loosing battle. Pullin' on the Big Black Chain.

Fire in the sky and darkness all around.
The big Blue Moon, The Dark and Bloody Ground.
It's Transcendental Junk yard, "What?" It will leave you dance'n saying, "What?"
Cause your fighting a loosing battle. Pullin' on the Big Black Chain.

I’m moving threw your dreaming body,
the voodoo prince of back yard karate,
I come to you with a mojo Mahdi,
A conqueror root. A black cat bone.
You will believe in the here and now.
Don't you know things have changed?
Can you pick up what I'm throwing down?
I'm pull'n on the Big Black Chain.

9. This Time another Year - Traditional
"This time another year you may be gone, to some lonesome graveyard. Can't say how long"

10. Things in the Sky - Winfield
It was August 21, 1955, Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Alien vs. Hillbilly. Saucers flying, shotgun shells fly'n, Dogs a'barking and no moonshine to be found. Billy Ray Taylor and his wife were visiting the Sutton farm on this particular night. While drawing water, he witnessed an "immense, shining object" landing about a quarter of a mile from the house. Beings appeared at windows and it was shoot first, ask questions later.

Hey, I've seen it all boys, I've seen it all, down at Luckys farm There was things in the sky Things in the sky Things in the sky

Yea, hang'n around Yea Last night Saw it fly'n, and pick'n them up In the fields yall', In the fields Like a big weird bug No wings on the thing Up a Hundred feet or more They were glow'n yall' You should have seen it go, go, go

Old man Lucky and Billy Ray, With a shotgun in his hands, Decieded to change things The old man, His cattle were mutalated, Eyes pulled out, By the things in the sky, Things in the sky, Things in the sky

11. Devils Elbow - Winfield
The Land Between the Lakes has so much history, and for me personally it is a mystical place that holds allot magic. With whole towns under water, moonshineners, buffalo, vampires, aliens, and catfish as big as cars. It is a place where the whole world can stop.

Smoking Barns and the fog of night.
Whisky fires when the weather's right.
While the mud cat here makes his bed
there’s zigg zagg lightning around your head.

This is the place between the river where they played Indian giver.
They gave a great flood and the sky went black
as they carried the houses into the cracks.

Everything stops at Devils Elbow.

This is the land where the sticks will walk and the owls will talk.
Don't go near the hotel at night. It's where the vampires take flight.

This is the place between the river where they played Indian giver.
They gave a great flood and the sky went black
as they carried the houses into the cracks.

Everything stops at Devils Elbow.
Everything stops at Devils Elbow
Everything stops…

12. Not Doing - Cicada Omega
"There is no way to talk about not-doing because it is the body that does it.
"To look is doing - to see is not-doing. In order to "stop the world,"
you must stop doing" - Carlos Castaneda

13. These Bones - Winfield
The sky holds the sun like the trees hold the ground.
Winter has begun to lay her blanket down.

There’s silence in my pocket and dust on my heart.
'Cause holding back is tearing me apart.

Cold wind is blowing All through my viens.
These bones show their age.

Like the leaves changing color, like the rain coming down.
Like the sky that’s cast over. So am I now, So am I now

I went out like a sunset, only going down.
I went into the darkness. I wonder who holds you now.

Production notes

As this is a self-produced project, everyone in the band contributed to almost every part of the process. But for those of you interested in starting our unauthorized biography, here are the details.

The entire album, except the tracks noted above, was recorded in 3 places in southeast Portland. The bulk of the recording was done in our practice space in Barry's basement. We also layed down some vocals and bass at Todd and Salim's house across the street, and some bass tracks in Daniyel's basement.

Dave Rue was our engineer, tweeking knobs and turning his head ever so slightly back and forth while contemplating the nature of sound and our album's potential affects on alien life. (We're on to you Dave. But we're okay with it.) Dave used Cubase on a Macintosh.

It was a tight space but we managed to separate at least a little and record at least the bass, guitar, and drums all at once. Our songs are organic in nature, never the same twice. We leave room for intuition and energy to speak, and we come from a heavy improvisational background, so recording one track at a time was out of the question. That said, once we were in production mode we had reason to re-record some parts. This was actually a good thing because we had gotten some new equipment in the mean time which led to better recordings, and Daniyel completed the construction of his suitcase bass, allowing there to be 2 different bass sounds on the album.

Design notes

Daniyel does the design work for the posters, the website, and this package. We worked as a team to conjure our favorite visual aspects as they relate to our music.

The main design elements on this package come from the December 31st, 1921 death announcement for Mary E. Rhodes. (We thank her in the credits.)
The card was augmented, of course, with the "four members, four skulls" image that I had developed for a poster from 2006. If you have heard us at all, you know that there is a prominent theme of life vs. death in our music. In a sentence that is much to breif, by keeping our heritage and traditions alive in our own contemporary way, we are ensuring the immortality of those before us.

Liner notes

Darren Puckett is a dear friend of ours that died very unexpectedly in the summer of 2007. He was one of the most genuine and supportive people that you could ever hope to meet in a lifetime. We still feel the loss very deeply. We have dedicated this, our first, album to him and his memory. We could not have done this, or become the people we are, without him.
